Mon., July 30, 6-9pm (rain date Aug. 6): With twenty-five years under its belt, Redbones knows barbecue and how to through a party! Redbones combines the two at its annual Pig Pickin’ and fund raiser for the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC).

The mid summer party takes place on the street in front of the restaurant and attracts hundreds who come for the Q and come for the cause!  The barbecue with fixin’s, sides and a beverage is $25.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids under 10 with proceeds going to the SHC.  No reservations necessary.  More information at 617.625.2200 and www.redbones.com.
Redbones Pig Pickin’ is true to Southern tradition – an outside event where the smoking lasts for hours and folks gather for the party which frequently supports a community cause.  For the July party, Redbones ‘Rig’ Master, Robert (Rudi) Rudolph, will fire up three custom made, portable ‘pig rigs’  Sunday night in front of the restaurant and slow smoke a couple of whole hogs for 16 – 20 hours ‘til they’re ready for pickin’ at the party.  Whether attending a pig pickin’ for the first time or often, being there when the pig comes out of the smoker is a must see moment – then step up for the food!

Along with the whole hogs, the Pig Pickin’ includes loins, butts, and bellies served with sides of slaw, corn on the cob, greens, corn bread and watermelon plus a choice of beer, lemonade or iced tea.

Of course, no Pig Pickin’ is complete without live music – this year provided by the The Springhill Rounders, The Frank Drake Band and returning favorite The Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band – Somerville’s own version of a New Orleans-style street band. www.slsaps.org

‘Redbones has donated the Pig Pickin’ proceeds to SHC for eleven years and we are grateful to Rob and Caryn (Redbones co-owners) for their loyal support,’ says SHC Executive Director, Mark Alston-Follensbee, who continues, ‘the party also raises awareness about the SHC and provides our existing contributors, as well as a new audience, with an opportunity to support us and come to a fun party!’
